The SIBO in the City of Hundred Towers
For its concert at this year’s WASBE conference, the Berne Symphonic Wind Orchestra (SIBO) will present a program of contemporary works by mainly Swiss composers.
For this reason, the Bern-based composer Stephan Hodel has been commissioned to compose a work for trumpet and wind ensemble. Happenstance will receive its world premiere in Prague with the internationally renowned Swiss soloist Giuliano Sommerhalder.
The concert opens with a late work by the Czech composer Zdeněk Jonák (1917-1995): Ciacona takes as its musical motif an old Bohemian chorale to which Bedřich Smetana already referred in his cycle My Fatherland (Má vlast) or also Karel Husa in his Music for Prague 1968.
The work by Stephan Hodel will be followed by another new work, Symphony No. 3 „Urban Landscapes“ by Franco Cesarini. This work was originally composed as a commission piece for the Swiss Federal Music Festival 2021. Fascinated by the beauty of Chicago, the Swiss composer Franco Cesarini has translated his emotions into music: this is how this symphony was born, a musical portrait of this metropolis overlooking Lake Michigan.
